Investing primarily in utilities, transportation and social infrastructure in the UK and Europe
Infrastructure was set up as a discreet business line within 3i in 2006, when we, in consortium with three other international investors, led the public-to-private acquisition of Anglian Water Group.
Our Infrastructure business has evolved significantly since then. At 30 September 2013, it had assets under management of £1.6 billion, investing through two vehicles, 3i Infrastructure plc and the 3i India Infrastructure Fund.
Growing our Infrastructure business is an important strategic priority for us, and, on 24 May 2013, we announced we had made an irrevocable offer to Barclays Bank plc to acquire Barclays Infrastructure Funds Management Limited (“BIFM”), its European infrastructure fund management business. The completion of this transaction was announced on 11 November 2013.
At that date, BIFM had assets under management of approximately £780 million and an investment team based in London and Paris. It was one of the first movers in the public private partnership (“PPP”) infrastructure market, raising its first fund in 1996 and investing a total of £1.7 billion across six funds.
The combined infrastructure investment team will continue to use this extensive experience and relationships to source attractive investment opportunities in the UK and across Europe.
